Aggression Towards De Lijn Staff in Ghent Leads to Arrest and Juvenile Sentencing

Gent –

The two cases of aggression towards De Lijn staff in Ghent on Friday evening are not without consequences. A minor must be sent to a closed institution for a month, while a 30-year-old suspect remains in custody for the time being.

The East Flanders public prosecutor’s office announced this on Sunday. The adult suspect (30) who was arrested caused a commotion at a stop in Veldstraat. The man turned out to have an alarm pistol in his pocket and when a tram driver and some bystanders pushed him to the ground, he was injured.

The 17-year-old minor was checked together with another young man at Vijfwindgatenstraat, near Ghent South. They turned out not to have a ticket and became aggressive towards De Lijn inspectors. A headbutt would have been given.

One of the two was arrested and was brought before the juvenile court. He is placed in a closed institution for a month. The police are currently still looking for the second minor.

The two incidents led to a spontaneous strike by De Lijn staff in Ghent on Saturday. Trams and buses ran normally again on Sunday. Consultations are planned for next week between the unions and Mayor Mathias De Clercq (Open VLD).
