The agent who hit the 27-year-old man who took people hostage in the Apple Store in Amsterdam in February will not be prosecuted. The Public Prosecution Service (OM) announced this on Friday. An investigation by the National Criminal Investigation Department has shown that the intervention of the agent of the Special Interventions Service (DSI) was justified.
The Public Prosecution Service believes that the agent has acted very adequately and calls hitting the hostage-taker an “effective intervention”. “By his actions, he immediately put an end to a very life-threatening situation for the hostage and the police officers who were stationed behind his service vehicle.”
It was not an option to use a service weapon, for example, the Public Prosecution Service writes, because the hostage-taker may have been carrying explosives.
On February 22, a man was taken hostage in the Apple Store. In addition, dozens of people were hiding in the building on Leidseplein. They were taken to safety by the police during and after the hostage situation. The hostage-taker demanded 200 million euros in crypto coins.
Finally, the hostage managed to run away, after which the hostage-taker was hit by a police vehicle. He died a day later from his injuries.
