(CNN) — The Office of Investigations of Georgia (GBI, for its acronym in English) says that a video monitoring appears to show a man pointing a taser at a police officer in Atlanta, before the soldier fired in the parking lot of a restaurant Wendy s.
The GBI identified the subject as Rayshard Brooks, 27, of Atlanta, an african american man.
The incident began with a call to police at 10:33 pm on Friday by a man who was sleeping in a vehicle parked in the driveway of the restaurant, causing other customers to have to miss it, ” said the GBI in a release.
The police did Brooks a field sobriety test, which he failed, according to the GBI. He resisted the arrest and fought with officers, said the GBI.
The director of the GBI Vic Reynolds reported Saturday that his department obtained a surveillance video of the incident from Wendy’s and reviewed videos of witnesses posted on social networks.
The surveillance video shows Brooks fighting with one of the agents and then fleeing with what appeared to be a taser for the police, said Reynolds.
“At that time, the agent Atlanta crouches down and retrieves the weapon from its sheath, the discharge, impacts to Mr. Brooks there, in the parking lot, and falls,” said Reynolds.
Brooks was taken to a hospital, where he died, according to the release. A police officer was treated for an injury and later released, revealed the GBI.
CNN has communicated with the Department of Police of Atlanta and the office of the mayor, but they have not responded.
The GBI reported that the surveillance video of the incident will be released to the public on Saturday. Reynolds said the agency is working to improve digitally the video.
