The data have been released National outcomes programmethe initiative promoted byAgenasthe national agency for regional health services that evaluates the quality of Italian hospital care.
The report evaluated the healthcare services of 1,363 Italian hospitals, public and private in 2023 and confirmed the high levels achieved by the “Giovanni Paolo II” tumor institute and the Orthopedics departments of the ASL Bari.
Bari Tumor Institute
The Cancer Institute in 2023 is attested as the first center in Puglia for the treatment of lung cancer (169 surgeries), uterine cancer (140 surgeries) and ovarian cancers (49 surgeries).
The complex structure of thoracic surgery confirms itself as the first in the region and the excellence of lung surgery in the South, with a number of operations that have been constantly growing for two years.
The complex Gynecology Oncology structure marks the Apulian record for volume of hospitalizations for surgical operations for uterine and ovarian tumors. Compared to 2022, in 2023 there was an increase of 44% in the volumes relating to operations for ovarian cancer and 55% in uterine cancer.
The data on the volume of operations were accompanied by the positive numbers relating to 30-day mortality for lung and colon cancer and the number of new resection operations, at 120 days, from conservative surgery for breast cancer. Values that place the Bari Institute in the ‘high quality level’ range, confirming the result achieved last year.

Confirmation of excellence also for the Orthopedics departments of the local health authority of Bari, regarding the timeliness and effectiveness in the treatment of femoral neck fracture.
Agenas data is based on surgical activities performed in Italy in 2023 by 686 departments. The Orthopedics of the San Giacomo Hospital in Monopoli ranks first in Italy among high-volume structures (i.e. those that treat at least 150 femur fractures per year) with 98.08% referring to treatment within 48 hours, and with a total of 246 operations performed.
Monopoli, together with the “Di Venere” hospital in Bari, is also among the 14 Italian structures (out of the 69 with the highest volume) that have reached or exceeded the 75% percentage of operations performed within 48 hours in 2023 and in the three previous years.
The data on the outcomes of high-volume orthopedics, over a 48-hour period, place three ASL Bari hospitals among the top ten in Italy: Monopoli in third place (97.82%), “Di Venere” in fifth place ( 97.54% and 260 operations) and in eighth the “San Paolo” of Bari (95.91% and 236 operations).
At number 26 in Italy is Altamura (91.87% and 154 femur fracture treatments within two days) and Molfetta in 44th place (88.9% and 163 operations).
