Age of Calamity Review – Buy, Budget or Demolish?

JJ and Emiel took an extensive look at Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. This combination between the Dynasty Warriors franchise and the Legend of Zelda series takes place 100 years before The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. But can this game actually be compared to Breath of the Wild? JJ and Emiel tell you in the Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity Review.

What role does Age of Calamity play in the Zelda canon?

Age of Calamity is set for 100 years before Breath of the Wild, in which Link wakes up healed after 100 years of sleep. What he’s healed of? The events in this game, of course. For example, Breath of the Wild talks about an event called ‘The Great Calamity’. A terrifying war in which you play a part. You don’t only do this as a Link. There are several well-known characters that return, such as Impa, Robbie and Purah. All familiar to the people who played Breath of the Wild. Only logically they are now 100 years younger and you experience what they did 100 years ago. So you may ask yourself if Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is necessary to get the entire Breath of the Wild story.

And a combination of two different styles

There are quite a few differences between the Zelda series and Dynasty Warriors. Where in Zelda you are mainly exploring and puzzling with a good dose of combat, the gameplay is really different in Dynasty Warriors. In that franchise you just fight against hundreds of enemies and exploration is only a very small part of the whole. And yet these series are now combined with each other. But is this combination a success? Or does it cause the game to have an identity crisis. JJ and Emiel tell you in the Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity Review.
