More than 40 years ago, Ágatha Ruiz de la Prada began to dedicate herself to fashion, first with a brief stay in the Madrid workshop of designer Pepe Rubio, but she soon took off and began to roll with her first fashion shows and the opening of her first store.
Since then it has rained a lot, a lot and the creator’s life has taken many turns. In the 80s she became one of the main promoters of the Movida Madrileña and she joined the journalist Pedro J. Ramírez as a couple, with whom she was the mother of her two children, Tristán and Cósima.
In 1991 the creator licensed her brand and since then we have seen daring and groundbreaking designs full of color come out of her head that are characterized by the use of a series of apparently childish shapes such as clouds, hearts, stars and flowers, mainly, something that managed to conquer us as children with its line of school supplies and that also stole the heart of Miley Cyrus, whom it managed to dress a few years ago.
Now the designer has granted an interview to The country where he has made a series of comparative comments on Latin American and Spanish art which may sound somewhat derogatory if not seen in context, but we are sure that it is simply the cutting and pasting of the video, its editing, since someone with the training and background of Ágatha Ruiz de la Prada would not I would say something like that like crazy.
“There was a time when Spanish art was very strong internationally. Now I go to many museums and Spanish art has disappeared. On the other hand, Latin American art, which was nothing, like Latin America, has had so much money and so much power lately. You go to New York and there is a lot of Latin American art, right? Like Cruz Díaz or Soto or Torres García… And Spanish art has dropped a ton.”
As we said, these statements undoubtedly you have to put them in context and we understand from them that this comparison is also born from a position in which the world is increasingly globalized, more open and in which more visibility is given to all forms of expression regardless of where they come from, occupying the place that They deserve to be aside from this, since the list of Latin American artists that we could list is enormous, starting with Frida Kahlo, continuing with Wilfredo Lam and ending with Botero just to start.
