Düsseldorf (dpa/lnw) – In front of Düsseldorf Airport, a hard shoulder on the A44 has been closed with warning lights to prevent illegal parking. This was confirmed by a spokesperson for the responsible Autobahn GmbH. The “Rheinische Post” had previously reported.
“Unfortunately, it has become common practice for road users heading to the airport to use the hard shoulder as a free alternative to parking garages. They wait there until the person they want to pick up announces “access”. Some users of these roads even leave their cars there and walk to the destination,” said the Autobahn GmbH spokesperson to the “Rheinische Post”.
The background: A barrier system was installed in front of the airport a few years ago, so that drivers can currently only stay there for seven free minutes to let someone out or construction (“Kiss & Fly Zone”) .
According to Autobahn GmbH, the warning lights on the hard shoulder have exceeded five kilometers since the end of October. They start on the A52 shortly before the A44 exit and end just before the entrance to the airport departure area. According to a spokesman, the Düsseldorf police were involved. The step is welcome.
As Autobahn GmbH emphasized, the warning lights are a temporary measure. By next year they want to get rid of the hard shoulder completely and turn it into a so-called range of motion called the Traffic then roll normally.
