Against anxiety, by Lola García

Comrade Enric Juliana wrote an article yesterday in this newspaper entitled “Ecoangoixa”. He described how the avalanche of information about climate change following the Glasgow summit provokes an anguished feeling that the end of the world is approaching. In fact, there are scientists who even talk about the “clock of the apocalypse.” It is not a question of removing gravity from global warming, but of emphasizing the helplessness that the succession of catastrophic expectations causes in many sectors of the population. There are times when there is more fear for what is to come than for what is already a reality. It happens, for example, with the migratory phenomenon. The expectation of a flood of immigrants raises concerns among some citizens, although, in reality, nothing has changed in their environment.

The truth is that the events of recent years have led us to be suspicious of the future: the Great Recession of 2008 gave way to an unimaginable pandemic and, just as we promised the clear sky, comes the shortage of supplies, the rise of energy and raw material prices, our particular escalation of light … and the increasingly reliable finding that the transition to a more environmentally friendly world will not be easy. In the face of this constant murmur of misfortunes, it is not difficult to be carried away by despair. Still, one has to think that the difficulties are overcome by leaving some learnings. Thus, in dealing with the pandemic crisis, austerity has been ruled out, while governments and citizens are now more aware than ever of the value of a good healthcare system. Precisely, the Galatea Foundation, which telematically attended to many health workers to give them psychological support during the pandemic, has detected that their mood is declining more now, when the virus subsides. Demonstrating our gratitude to them is essential, but above all we need to secure the resources so that they can face similar situations with guarantees in the future. And the central and Catalan governments have the ideal opportunity to do so these days, when budgets are being negotiated. This is a good remedy for anxiety.
