The tiger mosquito and the yellow fever mosquito are animals that do not originate in the Netherlands. They can spread various viral diseases in humans and animals, such as dengue (dengue fever), zika, chikungunya, yellow fever, West Nile virus and various forms of encephalitis.

The NVWA regulator only mentions on the website where and when the exotic mosquitoes have been found. The site does not indicate how many mosquitoes were found per find. That data will be published on the site in 2021. According to the platform Stop invasive exotics, this may involve large numbers. For example, the NVWA found 350 tiger mosquitoes in Valkenburg last year.
