Again parties and rubbish on the Würzburg Mainwiesen

It is a sad picture that the Würzburg Mainwiese gives on Sunday morning: empty alcohol bottles, pizza boxes, cigarette boxes and lots of other rubbish are scattered in the grass. Once again, readers of this medium have sent photos to the editorial team and expressed their displeasure with the situation on the Main. About parties, disturbance of the peace, drinking bouts and last but not least about the great environmental pollution that is carried out here. The Würzburg police have also recently commented on the issue.

From the press office of Police Headquarters Lower Franconia, Chief Inspector Michael Zimmer said that with increasingly rising temperatures, the entire eastern bank of the Main is developing into an area of attraction that is heavily frequented by visitors during the day, in the evening, but also at night. “The police understand people’s need to meet outdoors, have fun and spend their free time together,” he said. However, especially in the evening hours on the weekend, there are sometimes massive disorderly disturbances, “including disturbances of the peace, urinating and littering”, as well as aggressive behavior in some people due to the increasing alcoholism.

Police operation in the area around the “old crane”

According to Zimmer, the Würzburg police are checking ?? also with the support of the riot police? regularly the affected areas on the Main. On this weekend, for example, there will be a major police operation in the area around the ?? Alter Kranen ?? in the night from Saturday 29 May to Sunday 30 May at around 9.15 p.m. came.

With the support of neighboring Main Franconian offices and service dog handlers, a strong presence was shown on site, so that most of the people left, explains the police chief inspector. The officers then walked across the entire area on the Main, “instructing and controlling people who caused noise, including with jukeboxes.” Two boxes had to be secured due to lack of transparency.

Overall, it must be stated that several hundred people stayed on the Main until the early hours of the morning. “Especially after midnight, there is a more aggressive and more uninhibited mood in terms of volume due to increased alcohol consumption.” The police had to completely vacate Felix-Freudenberger-Platz on Saturday night around 1 a.m. The same thing happened in the early morning hours of Sunday in the area of the Main Quay. There was also a lot going on at Theodor-Heuss-Damm and the police broke up groups celebrating.

Zimmer emphasizes that the Würzburg police – also in constant, close coordination with the city of Würzburg – always carry out offensive controls with a communicative approach and, if necessary, show a strong presence. On the part of the police there will be talks again this week on how a balance can be found between the interests of residents, walkers and celebrations.
