Again no victory: Seppi to New York with no sense of achievement – tennis

The ATP 250 tournament in Winston-Salem is the last preparation tournament before the US Open. While Jannik Sinner is taking a break, Andreas Seppi (ATP 88) met Ilya Ivashka in the first round.

The Belarusian, who is ranked 63rd in the world, turned out to be a strong opponent. Ivashka defeated the South Tyrolean in North Carolina in two sets, which is why Seppi will arrive in the preparatory tournaments for the US Open (from August 30th) without success.

4: 6, 4: 6 was the result from the point of view of Seppi, who had never before played against Ivashka (he won the Challenger tournament in Val Gardena in autumn 2020). In the first set, both players hardly made any mistakes and so it went back and forth for a long time without many breakballs. In the entire first movement, Seppi had absolutely no opportunity to take a service from the Belarusian. Ivashka did better when he made the break to 5: 4 – the key to the 1-0 lead.

In the second set it took less long before the first break occurred. Again it was Ivashka who put Seppi under pressure. But the 37-year-old veteran could not react for a long time and only had his first break chance in the entire match when the score was 3: 3. She could not use Seppi, which is why Ivaskha pulled away to 5: 3. In the last rallies of the game, the Eastern European didn’t let the butter be removed from the bread. After 1:34 hours of play, Ivashka converted his first match point to a 2-0 victory.
