Gent –
The Ghent Festivities are canceled for the second year in a row. This will most likely be announced by ships of Festivities Annelies Storms (Vooruit) during a press conference on Monday. The reason is easy to guess: the corona virus and the rising infection rates.

According to the city council, a watered-down version of the Ghent Festivities would make no sense. Moreover, no one is waiting for the logistical nightmare when a distinction has to be made between vaccinated and non-vaccinated.
The fact that the City takes the plunge before the federal government has made a decision has a lot to do with the square organizers. They must be able to start or stop their preparations three months before the start of the Ghent Festivities. In order to provide the organizers with more clarity, the ships Storms will sit with them around the table for the press conference on Monday.

Ivan Saerens, the organizer of the Sint-Baafsplein, already felt the downpour. “It is clear that these will not be normal Ghent Festivities. How should they manage all of this properly and safely? We have to see if there is support to postpone the Festivities to, for example, August. But the budget can also be moved to 2022, because then we will all want to work extra hard. ”
