No less than 105 pieces of luggage from a flight to Sicily were left behind at Schiphol on Monday morning, while holidaymakers left for the sun. “Almost 190 Dutch people have been walking in their jeans at 40 degrees for 2 days in Sicily,” a traveler said angrily. He also says that people on the Italian island have queued for three hours to fill out forms with two Italian employees at the airport. They were not prepared for the influx: “They had to print the forms.”
Transavia is disappointed that the suitcases were delayed and let them know that they are now at the airport of Catania. “They will then be delivered to the location specified by the passengers. They were able to fill out a form with their whereabouts details on it,” said a spokeswoman.
Staff shortage
The problems were announced a few weeks ago by trade union FNV and various travel companies in De Telegraaf. Because handling companies – which are responsible for, among other things, checking in and transporting suitcases at the airport – have major staff shortages, it sometimes takes far too long before luggage is in the right place. Sources told De Telegraaf this week that sometimes only one employee is available to provide luggage for an entire flight.
Transavia also mentions the crowds. “Unfortunately, we are still dealing with the corona crisis. We have to deal with a lot of extra checks and extra work during the processing. We need to deploy extra capacity for this. Together with our handling partners, we do everything we can to make the operation as smooth as possible and unfortunately we sometimes have to let a flight depart without all the luggage on board,” said a spokeswoman. The handler is indeed struggling with a shortage of manpower. “As a result, suitcases are sometimes not loaded or unloaded on time in recent days, and we also occasionally have to deal with longer waiting times and delays of our flights.”
