Again flooding in Belgium: ‘It was short, but very violent’

According to Mayor Maxime Prévot of Namur, the situation in his city is worse than during last week’s flooding, with several neighborhoods flooded. “There is also water damage to the hospital and rest homes, but so far we have no knowledge of deaths or injuries,” he told VRT News.

In Namur, the floods last night led to gas leaks, fires, fuel oil leakage and major damage to roads, the Flemish broadcaster writes. Cobblestones and asphalt slabs also washed away.

“It’s just like last week”, VRT News quotes the fire brigade of Namur. “This time it is the entire left bank of the Meuse that has been affected. We focus on saving people and the stability of homes. Evacuations are sometimes necessary for safety reasons.”

Intense showers

The rain also caused problems in other provinces last night. For example, parts of Walloon Brabant had to deal with large mudflows. In some streets of the town of Walhain, they were five feet high. Several streets in the province of Antwerp were flooded.

The Belgian weather institute KMI warns that it could become “unstable again” this afternoon, with outside being quite intense and a chance of thunderstorms.
