The excitement of the national children’s and youth tournaments returns to Salvadoran fields with the start of the AA Children’s championship, for 11 and 12 year old players. On the opening day, the teams from the Agabeisi (La Libertad) and Meanguera del Golfo (La Unión) academies began with victories, in the tournament organized by the Salvadoran Baseball Federation (Fedebeis), with the support of the National Sports Institute of El Salvador (INDES).
The squirrels beat the Bengoa team 16-1, while the “Gulf Warriors” defeated Don Bosco’s team 16-14. The day will be completed in the middle of the week with the clash between Zacamil and Colegio Dominico-Santa Ana.
At the Agabeisi Complex diamond, located in La Sultana, Antiguo Cuscatlán, the homeowners took the 16-1 victory, thanks to a great pitch work by left-hander José Cuevas, who pitched three innings without allowing hits, one earned run, with five strikeouts and the same number of walks issued. He was relieved by José A. Hernández, who allowed no hits or runs in one inning, with one strikeout and two walks. Both combined so that the visit went without hits in the game.
“I started my performance on the mound a little nervous since I threw a couple of balls in a row, but from then on I calmed down and managed to get into the rhythm. Thank God for this first victory of the tournament, let’s hope many come,” Cuevas commented.
But not only Cuevas contributed with his arm, since as the leadoff hitter in manager Víctor Salazar’s lineup, he went 2-for-2, a triple among his connections, with a couple of runs scored and a stolen base. Catcher Santiago Acosta also stood out on offense by hitting a home run with his legs in two visits to the plate, with a run scored and an RBI. Álex Carrillo was the defeated pitcher.
In the east of the country, specifically at the Cyrill Errington stadium in La Unión, the Meanguera del Golfo team defended its fiefdom by beating the Soyapango-Don Bosco team 16-14. Javier Alfaro was the winning pitcher, Pablo López took the loss and Carlos Galeas scored the save.
The winners included Kelvin Bonilla, who went 2-for-3, with a home run included, and the girl Nidia Barraza, who went 2-for-2 with a single and triple. For Soyapango, Dominic García went 2-for-3, with a home run.
The second date of the tournament, to be played on Saturday, March 16, will feature the duels Zacamil vs Bengoa, Agabeisi vs Meanguera del Golfo and Soyapango vs Colegio Dominico-Santa Ana.
