after United Airlines, the big bank Citigroup will lay off its unvaccinated employees

The American bank has informed its employees that they will be made redundant if they are not vaccinated in the coming days. Nearly 10% of the workforce, 16,000 people, would be affected.

Citigroup will lay off its employees who are not vaccinated by January 14. The American banking group informed them by email this Friday, with this fairly clear ultimatum: next Friday, if you are not vaccinated, you will be dismissed immediately and without compensation. A total of 10% of the workforce would be affected, which represents 16,000 employees.

The bank explains that each situation will be examined on a case-by-case basis, with exemptions provided for medical or religious reasons.

Citigroup isn’t the first American company to take such drastic action. A few months ago the airline United Airlines had fired 200 employees who refused to be vaccinated.

Possible in the United States

No injection, no work: in the United States it’s perfectly legal. Companies have the right to impose vaccination and to fire the recalcitrant. They ultimately do what Joe Biden failed to impose.

In September, the American president passed a law to make vaccination compulsory in all companies with more than 100 employees, a text since blocked by multiple legal actions. It is the Supreme Court which must now decide and after the first debates, the judges should definitively bury this law, which would be a failure for Joe Biden who wanted to relaunch the vaccination campaign: only 62% of Americans are fully vaccinated against the Covid-19.
