Bisnis.com, JAKARTA – A number of gaming companies in the United States (United States) have received letters from the US government requesting information regarding their relationship with Chinese technology company Tencent.
Gaming companies, including Epic Games, Riot Games, and others, have reportedly received letters from the US government requesting information about data security protocols and their relationship with Tencent.
As quoted by Bloomberg and Techcrunch.com, Saturday (19/9/2020), the US Foreign Investment Commission, chaired by the US Treasury Department, is reviewing information on the extent to which these companies protect US citizen data.
Tencent, the world’s largest gaming company, has stakes in a number of US companies, including Riot Games and 40% in Epic Games.
The US move could be a strategy to force Tencent to sell its stake in Uncle Sam’s company, as happened to TikTok.
“This decision [terkait TikTok] “Proves that US President Donald Trump will do everything possible to ensure national security and protect the American people from threats from the Chinese Communist Party,” said US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross.
To date, Tencent has at least 300 investments in its portfolio, including Riot Games, which owns 93%.
