Gaming companies including Epic Games, Riot Games, and other companies have reportedly received letters from the US Government asking about data security protocols and their relationship with Tencent.
As quoted from Bloomberg and Techcrunch.com, Saturday (19/9/2020), the US Foreign Investment Commission, chaired by the US Treasury Department, is combing information about the extent to which these companies protect US citizen data.
Tencent, the world’s largest gaming company, owns stakes in a number of US companies, including Riot Games and 40 percent in Epic Games.
The move by the US could be a strategy to force Tencent to sell its shareholdings in Uncle Sam’s companies, similar to what it did to TikTok.
“This decision [terkait TikTok] prove that US President Donald Trump will do everything possible to ensure national security and protect the US people from the threats of the Chinese Communist Party, “said US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross.
To date, Tencent has at least 300 investments in its portfolio, including Riot Games with 93% ownership.
