Second division soccer team Fortuna Düsseldorf has to pay 5000 euros because of the unsportsmanlike behavior of one of its supporters. The sports court of the German Football Association (DFB) sentenced the club to the fine on Monday after Richard Hempel’s assistant referee was hit in the back of the head by a lighter from the spectator area during the game at Hamburger SV. The judgment is final.
After extensive investigations, the perpetrator was identified as a supporter of Fortuna. The investigation work and the club’s apology to Hempel was taken into account in favor of the Düsseldorf team, the DFB announced. Otherwise, a fine of 20,000 euros would have been possible.
The club has announced that it intends to punish the thrower with a stadium ban procedure and club exclusion.
