After three years since the pandemic’s inception, Brazil hits 700,000 COVID-related fatalities.

The South American giant was the country with the highest number of deaths in Latin America and second in the world.

Brazil reached 700,000 deaths from covid-19 on Tuesday, three years after the first case was registered in the country, the second most mourning in the world due to the pandemic, the Ministry of Health reported.

The figure “includes all interrupted trajectories and bereaved families. Thousands of these could have different stories with a simple action: vaccination, ”said the Health portfolio in a statement.

The South American giant was the country with the highest number of deaths in Latin America and second in the world (in absolute numbers, in both cases), behind the United States, which accumulated 1.1 million, according to data from the World Health Organization. (WHO).

The covid killed 6.8 million people globally, until the last record of the organization, on March 21.

More than 85% of the Brazilian population has taken at least one dose of the anticovid vaccine since the start of the campaign in January 2021, in which some 510 million immunizers were applied, according to data from the Ministry of Health.

The pandemic broke out in Brazil at the end of February 2020, under the government of the far-right Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2022), a denier who compared the covid to “a little flu”, refused to wear a mask and opposed vaccination.

Current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and other opponents defended vaccination against the virus, which slowed its multiplication and prevented millions of deaths.

Lula, in power since January, came to call Bolsonaro “genocidal” for his management of the pandemic.

“The vaccine that today is freely available in all health units in Brazil could have changed the lives of families who lost loved ones during the pandemic,” the Ministry of Health said in the note.

Brazil recently made bivalent vaccines available against different covid variants.
