(Reuters) — Goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, who captained Mexico’s squad at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, has finished his second spell with América to continue his career in Europe, the Mexican club reported on Tuesday.
The 37-year-old goalkeeper, who attended his fifth World Cup in Qatar, returned to América’s ‘Águilas’ in 2019 after crossing clubs in Europe.
“After three and a half years in his second phase as goalkeeper of Las Águilas, Guillermo Ochoa bids farewell to the institution that has seen him grow and establish himself as a historic player for American and Mexican soccer.”
“Thank you Guillermo Ochoa for helping build our story of greatness, you will always be an Eagle from the cradle. We wish you success in your next challenge in Europe,” the team posted on their Twitter account.
The goalkeeper began his career in 2004 with América, where he was champion of the 2005 Clausura tournament. In 2011, he moved to Ajaccio in France and three years later joined Málaga in Spain, from where he was transferred to loan to Granada in 2016. joined Standard de Liège in Belgium a year later.
“I will always be grateful to the American fans and the board of directors for their wholehearted support,” Ochoa said in a Club América statement.
