With a few days left before the first 800,000 doses of vaccines against Covid-19 enter the country, the Government continues to increase prevention actions, to avoid an escalation of infections. Through Ministerial Agreement 28-2021, the Health portfolio created the Technical Council Specific, which will have the power to recommend the development of regulations and the implementation of public policies to reduce and address infections.
Guatemala has been one of the countries with the best results in terms of prevention and control of the pandemic, which made it possible to mitigate the economic impact that was generated by the forced confinement. Last week, President Alejandro Giammattei reported on the reduction of infections at the national level, which allowed the Ministry of Health to suspend some commercial restrictions imposed due to fear of an escalation of infections.
The ministerial agreement also orders the technical council to take care of inter-institutional coordination, in order to ensure that the agencies respond and act according to the responsibilities that correspond to them. The significance of the creation of this group of scientists is undoubted, as well as the importance of the moment in which it arises.
The early entry into the country of the first vaccines is an unquestionable incentive for a population that has been severely affected by the pandemic, and that requires news that will allow it to continue and, in the best of cases, resume their lives. In this sense, it is worth noting that the most recent measurement of the Covid-19 Health Alert Board, by the Ministry of Health, warns of a hopeful reduction in cases.
When comparing the records of last Saturday with the previous measurement, a noticeable decrease is observed in municipalities with red alert (which includes the provinces with greater risks), which fell from 89 to 51. Similar impact is had in the yellow alert ( that brings together the communities with lower risk), which rose from 149 to 189.
These decreases in contagion allow us to reach some conclusions, such as the responsibility that citizens have had to face the disease, since it is seen that biosecurity measures were continued, such as constant hand washing, social distancing and correct use of the mask. In addition, the role that the Government has played is evident, which does not cease in its efforts to prevent and help.
