Farmers in Greece are not happy. Negotiations between the farmers and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis have ended. The first reactions indicate that many of the demands of the protesters have not been fulfilled. A reaction from the farmers’ unions in the country is expected, BNR reported.
“Again, the agricultural sector has been lied to by the Mitsotakis government” was the first comment from the headquarters of the opposition SYRIZA.
The protesters demanded an electricity price cap of 7 cents per kilowatt hour, while the government offered them a scheme with lower prices for the next two years only. Those who have tax obligations will pay more expensive electricity.
The return of the excise tax on fuels will take place in a shorter time, and negotiations will be conducted for additional financing for fuels from next year. Farmers are unhappy that there is no commitment to introduce a strict law against traders for the illegal import of agricultural products from abroad, which are sold on the local market as Greek. Farmers also did not get support in demanding full natural disaster benefits.
The first comments of the farmers after the negotiations were over were that “aspirin does not cure serious diseases”.
Farmers’ union meetings begin in places where they will decide whether to continue the protests or accept the government’s proposal.
