After the NATO storm, Russia will stop sending gas to Finland tomorrow

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

gas company RussiaGazpromGAZP.MM, will stop shipping natural gas to Finland starting tomorrow, Saturday (21/5), amid tensions due to the country’s desire to enter NATO.

The Finnish state gas company, Gasum, reported that they had received this notification from the Russian side today, Friday (20/5).

“It is unfortunate that the supply of natural gas under our supply contract will be suspended,” said Gasum’s CEO, Mika Wiljanen, in a statement quoted Reuters.

“However, we have prepared for this situation and made sure there will be no disruption in the gas delivery network. We will be able to supply gas to all consumers in the next few months.”

In addition, Gasum also stated that he would provide gas supplies to Finnish consumers through other sources, such as the Balticconnector pipeline that connects the country with Estonia.

The cut off of gas supply was due to the issue of currency payments. Gasum refuses to pay for Gazprom’s gas exports in rubles.

This suspension also comes at a time when relations between Finland and Russia have deteriorated due to Helsinki’s decision to join NATO.
