After the minutes of silence “for the announced death of the hospital”, Jean-Luc Mélenchon campaigning at the NHC

On Wednesday May 25 in the morning, Jean-Luc Mélenchon went to the New Civil Hospital (NHC) in Strasbourg. The goal: to speak with the collective of caregivers who launched the minute of silence for “the announced death of the public hospital”. The opportunity for them to make their demands heard regarding their difficult working conditions.

Sitting around a wooden table in the shade, Jean-Luc Mélenchon listens to the testimonies of a dozen caregivers from the New Civil Hospital (NHC) in Strasbourg. He is passing through the Alsatian capital this Wednesday, May 25 in the morning. Sandra Regol and Emmanuel Fernandes, respectively candidates for the New Popular Ecological and Social Union (Nupes) in the first and second constituencies of Bas-Rhin, are at his side.

Among the main grievances of the medical profession, an increase in salaries, the implementation of a massive training plan for nurses and caregivers or even the cessation of fee-for-service pricing, a system of hospital funding accused by unions of causing severe budget cuts.

It is no coincidence that Jean-Luc Mélenchon chose Strasbourg hospital for his visit. It is here that the minute of silence was initiated “for the announced death of the public hospital”. A movement taken up throughout France: “We are surprised that it worked so well”, welcomes Vincent Poindron, immunologist doctor.

“If we continue, we are heading towards a hospital crisis”

The nursing staff of the University Hospitals of Strasbourg (HUS) are going through a difficult period, particularly following the signing of the “future contract” with the Regional Health Agency (ARS). A contract which obliges the HUS to increase their activity without hiring… while reducing the number of non-medical staff positions until 2026.

Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s visit to the NHC was therefore an opportunity for him to sound the alarm on the deterioration of the public hospital service. The self-proclaimed candidate for Prime Minister points to the current government’s desire to “reduce the average length of stay in hospital” as well as “fee for service”. He condemns the financial and performance logics which “are gaining momentum in the hospital world”. “If we continue like this, we are heading towards a serious health crisis”, concludes Jean-Luc Mélenchon.

Highlight the Nupes

The press conference over, several nurses, among the fifty people present, go to Jean-Luc Mélenchon. The opportunity to chat with him and take a selfie to immortalize the arrival of the deputy. “I will show it to my children tonight. Many of us appreciate Mélenchon here. For me, he is the only one who bangs his fist on the table and who understands the problems of caregivers, ”underlines Flore, hospital care assistant (ASH). She welcomes the creation of Nupes, which unites several left-wing parties for the legislative elections, and hopes to see Jean-Luc Mélenchon become Prime Minister.

The rebellious took advantage of his passage through the Alsatian capital to meet Jeanne Barseghian (EELV), mayor of the city. It was also an opportunity for him to draw attention to the candidacies of Nupes in Alsace. Almost all the candidates were at his side this Wednesday, May 25. The family photo taken, Jean-Luc Mélenchon left for Paris to “present the emergency plan for purchasing power” of Nupes in the afternoon.
