Hérault prefect announces ban on BDS demonstrations in support of Palestine. Shows planned for August 30 and 31 in Béziers.
The chief executive of Hérault François-Xavier Lauch decided, this Thursday, August 29, to ban demonstrations in support of the Palestinian people organized by the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) group this weekend in Montpellier and Béziers.
The prefectural order says that this decision was made after the attack on the synagogue Beth Jacob de Grand-Motte last weekend with a man wearing “A keffiyeh on his head and a Palestinian flag on his belt“.”The suspect’s intention was to kill the Jewsindicating the senior officer. Despite the facts and the anti-Semitic nature of this attack, several accounts on social networks continued to spread disinformation online, denying its truth or its anti-Semitic character.“
According to the professor, “there is a high risk that the conflicts will spread to national territory and that changes will occur between the supporters of one or the other parties to the conflict“.
For its part, BDS 34 remembers that the senior officer of Hérault had already banned a gathering on the evening of the attack in La Grande-Motte. A decision denied on social networks by the group that supports Palestine.
” BDS is a movement against racism etc non-violent. The ban on the gathering “Against the genocide and its supporters” clarifies the purpose of exploiting the event: it is a question of banning a show that is disappearing denial of Israeli genocide in the Gaza Strip.“, announced the gathering.
The gathering’s arrival in Montpellier this weekend was set to be a major event according to the organisers: “ “The display of this flag is a way to pay tribute to the victims of the genocide in Gaza, but also to protest against the present ban.”
