After the fire, 6 associations warned of the lack of conservation measures for the former Bavarian hospital

A month ago it blew up at the level of the wooden roof, where it was still possible, in the left wing of the former monumental entrance to the Bavarian hospital. Regularly occupied, the site (which must be preserved) had already suffered other fires in November 2010 and 2017. This is at least the third disaster since the rest of this former hospital complex was demolished in the late 1980s.

The heritage defense associations Le Veux Liège and SOS Mémoire de Liège united, as well as the neighborhood associations Patrimoine Outre-Meuse, the Free Republic of Outremeuse, the Free Commune of Saint-Pholien-des-Prés and the Neighborhood Committee d ‘Outremeuse, are concerned about the poor condition of the site and wonder about the desire to preserve it when the rigors of winter begin to attack the bare structures of the building. “There is a great risk of seeing a remarkable neo-Renaissance building disappear, listed in the heritage inventory and emblematic for many Liège residents.“, specifies the group.

And denounce: “Although the responsibility will probably once again be attributed to the squatters, the progressive destruction of the building is due to the inaction of the developer-owner who does not undertake the implementation of the burdensome renovation project imposed by the Bavaria rehabilitation site permit. As the construction of the first new buildings draws to a close and the arrival of the first inhabitants looms, the entrance pavilion of the old hospital remains a cancer that some would like to see disappear.

The six associations then wrote to the mayor and the municipal college asking them to impose the necessary conservation works on the promoter to avoid any subsequent deterioration of the building. And of course they strongly oppose any dismantling or demolition of facades or parts of facades for security reasons, in the meantime.”the rapid renovation of this building so dear to the inhabitants of Liège.

Keep or demolish the monumental entrance of the old ruined hospital in Bavaria?
