A player from the Toronto Raptors of the National Basketball Association (NBA) initially injured his neck on Wednesday in a game against Italy, in which the Australian national team won 86:83. The injury was exacerbated by an unsuccessful slip in the bathroom.
“It became clear to the medics that this was a little more serious than a moderate injury, so as a precaution, he was taken to a hospital where he would be examined,” said team physician David Hughes.
Bains is expected to recover, but will not return to the pitch at the Tokyo Olympics.
“I am disappointed that I cannot continue to participate in the Olympic Games,” said the athlete, adding that he has worked hard with the team to pave the way for a historic Olympic medal.
“However, I am absolutely certain that they will do it,” the team praised Bains.
Australia is currently the third group leader in the Olympic basketball tournament. The team has won both games against Nigeria and Italy.
The Australian men’s basketball team has never won Olympic gold, but a strong team has gone to Tokyo with NBA players such as Pete Mills and Joe Ingles. Australian national team head coach Brian Gordijan is still convinced that the team’s chances are good even without Bains.
For Australia, the last game in Group B is expected on Saturday against Germany.
