After the conviction of the “Gazeta Wyborcza” journalist, Poland has closed the border crossing with Belarus

It has already been announced that the Belarusian court on Wednesday sentenced Pohobut to eight years in prison for criticizing the regime of the Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko.

The 49-year-old journalist was found guilty of acts harmful to national security and incitement to hatred.

Pohobut has Belarusian citizenship and belongs to the ethnic Polish minority in Belarus.

The journalist was detained in March 2021 and tried in Grodno, near the Polish border.

Pohobut remained in Belarus after Lukashenko ruthlessly suppressed mass protests against his regime in the summer of 2020. The protests were followed by targeting the remaining dissidents and critics of the regime.

Poland has demanded the journalist’s release, considering the charges brought against him completely unfounded.
