After the closure of the Russian market, Busulis wants to sing songs in Lithuanian

The well-known and popular musician Intars Busulis emphasizes the role of the Latvian language in his creative activity: “It is important for me to express myself in my mother tongue and the way of expression is music and songs. That is the basis of the foundation. After all, Latvian is my favorite language and all my loved ones speak and want to hear me in Latvian. It is in the language we think that it is possible to express the deepest emotions and the truest feelings. ”

The musician believes that every music enthusiast should at least initially develop their talent in their mother tongue and only then, if the desire and strength, can realize themselves in other languages. “It simply came to our notice then. At the beginning of my creative career, I tried to sing in English because it seemed stylish. To be honest, I didn’t get any emotions or satisfaction from it. Only when I started singing in Latvian, I finally really felt the song as a story about values - then success followed in the hearts of the listeners. In that sense, I would like to emphasize that it is stylish to sing in Latvian, because with this measure we can measure our self-confidence as a nation, ”I. Busulis is convinced.

If singing in Latvian has even higher ambitions, then you can try your hand at other languages as well, the artist points out. “I myself have realized my ambition to sing in Russian, because I speak this language very well and I like its phonetics. I believe that we should follow the example of the Greeks: in this Mediterranean country, it is good for two or three radio stations to play foreign hits, while the rest play music of different styles, rhythms and tempos in Greek. I think it’s cool. ” Intars Busulis notes that there should be at least one radio station in Latvia that would broadcast Latvian hit music and it would also give more opportunities for young musicians to express themselves in their mother tongue. “It would be welcome and I would also listen to a radio station where only Latvian hits could be heard. My rule is that experimental pop music will be played on the air, which also includes my work, ”the musician notes with a smile. This format will be able to live in a young audience if the music is accompanied by good programs, competitions and radio disc jockeys who know the audience and know how to address it.

According to the data compiled by the research company Kantar, in the autumn of 2021 and the winter of 2022, an average of 68.5% or 1 million 45 thousand Latvians aged 16 to 74 listened to the radio every day. During this time, on average, 87.1% or 1 million 329 thousand Latvians in this age group listened to the radio during the week. One radio listener spends an average of 4 hours and 6 minutes a day listening to the radio.

“I would like to emphasize that very big music lovers live in Latvia and every year musicians are expected to have a high-quality and new music show. Unlike Russia, where one program can be run for five years, the Latvian audience expects something new every year. Although we have to get used to preparing something new every time, it is a pleasant concern, because the listeners appreciate our work, ”adds I. Busulis.

As a pleasant surprise for fans of his talent, Busulis promises to release a new album this year, but thinking about new horizons in his creative career after the closure of the Russian market, the musician says he wants to sing songs in another Baltic language – Lithuanian – which could be a great step.
