The launch on the anniversary of the moon landing follows the one made by Virgin Galactic president Richard Branson by 11 days
The thumbs up of the US billionaire was the first visible salute from the capsule of the New Shepard. Once he donned his Texan hat, it was the Blue Origin patron who first stepped out of the hatch to uncork a bottle of champagne. The rocket took off from the Texas desert with the aim of crossing the boundary line of the Earth’s atmosphere.
After the owner of Virgin Galactic Richard Branson, it’s Jeff Bezos’ turn to reach space. On the anniversary of the conquest of the Moon by Apollo 11, the Amazon founder went into orbit aboard the New Shepard rocket, developed by his start-up Blue Origin. On board, in addition to Bezos, his brother Mark, the 82-year-old aviator Wally Funk and the 18-year-old Olivier Daemen, respectively the oldest and the youngest astronaut in the history of space flights.
Richard Branson, who on July 9 had ventured into a similar undertaking, congratulated Bezos and the other crew members via Twitter.
