Just hours after the terrorist attack on the Pulse nightclub, Imam Muhammad Musri condemned the act in the strongest terms in Orlando. He called on Florida Muslims to donate blood for the victims. Many responded to this call.
Imam Musri is the President of the Islamic Society of Central Florida, an association of Sunni communities. According to the imam, the perpetrator cannot claim to be a Muslim. The shooter had committed himself to the so-called “Islamic State” (IS) during the crime. The IS, says Imam Musri, is a murderous cult that invokes Islam, but is not Muslim.
At a joint event held by Christian, Jewish and Muslim community leaders yesterday evening, Musri said again that there are basic rules that are binding for everyone.
“As believers, God calls us to love our neighbors. Without exception, without stamping anyone. God does not say: You should love your Christian neighbor or your Muslim neighbor. all of our neighbors. “
A good relationship with politics for 20 years
The organization “American Islam” is closely linked to the Islamic Society of Central Florida. According to her own statement, she has made it her business to propagate a moderate Islam in the USA, to free Islam from extremism and to offer a contemporary, modern interpretation of the Koran.
The managing director of “American Islam” is Bassem Shaban. His organization has had a close relationship with local politics and the security authorities, including the FBI, for 20 years. The FBI asked for the Muslim organization to participate in all press conferences held by politics and security agencies.
The signal to the Muslim communities is that the investigation of the background to the crime does not go hand in hand with a general suspicion of American Muslims. Bassem Shaban, on the other hand, wants to distance himself from extremists and terrorists.
“There have been terrorist attacks all over the world since 9/11. The Bataclan attack in Paris, the attack in Brussels, the growth of IS – against this background we want to distance ourselves very clearly. Represent the Orlando perpetrator and all the others not Islam. But all of this falls back on the Muslim communities in this country and elsewhere in the world. “
“Treat everyone with respect”
Extremist fringe elements do not represent Islam, but an ideology of hatred and violence. He wanted to clarify that immediately after the Orlando attack.
“As representatives of the Muslims in Orlando, we wanted to act quickly and make it clear that we are in solidarity with all religious communities and with all groups and communities in Florida.”
Imam Musri continues to reject homosexuality as a way of life. But this is a private matter and nobody should be the target of violence because of their sexual orientation.
“If we want to be sincere towards God and our country, we have to be respectful of everyone. And especially towards the group of gays and lesbians, who in the past have been so widely discriminated against and targeted by hatred. We are determined to do so change. Because everyone has the right to love, respect and equal treatment. “
