The capital, Tripoli, restored one of its most important traditions associated with the holy month of Ramadan, by firing the Iftar cannon and hearing its sound after an absence that lasted for years, amid an atmosphere of joy on the faces of those present.
The Municipality of Tripoli supervised the return of the breakfast cannon after its absence since 1975, inviting the city’s residents to participate in the ceremony dedicated to the demonstration that was held in Algiers Square in the center of the capital.
The breakfast cannon launch ceremony was attended by the mayor of Tripoli, Ibrahim Al-Khulaifi, and a number of notables and citizens of the city, who expressed their happiness with the Ramadan event.
Al-Khulaifi said that the breakfast cannon was an ancient tradition for the people of the capital, Tripoli, expressing his happiness at any steps that contribute to restoring the cultural life that is associated with the city’s residents.
Al-Khulaifi indicated in a statement to the Turkish Anatolia Agency that the breakfast cannon stopped since the seventies of the last century, and that they insist that such cultural customs return.
In the context, a member of the Municipal Council in Tripoli, Akram Abdel-Majid Dribka, said that the purpose of returning the Iftar cannon is to bring happiness to the residents of the capital by reviving cultural celebrations inside the old city after the security situation has stabilized.
Dribke explained to the Turkish Anadolu Agency that the breakfast cannon was fired from the Saraya Castle, the largest museum in Libya, at the beginning of the seventies, but after that this tradition stopped.
