After the 4:4 against Brig and the 3:5 against Zurich: Uzwil remains in mediocrity

The Uzwil badminton club is struggling in the National League A. Uzwil draws 4:4 against Brig, who are tied on points, and Uzwil even loses 3:5 against bottom team Zurich. The team again has to cope with a short-term absence due to illness.

Zvonimir Durkinjak declared a short-term forfeit on Saturday and was back in action on Sunday.

The bad luck with injuries and illnesses seems to never end. While the three injured men (Bruun, Manavalan, Kropf) were still not fit for action, the Croatian Zvonimir Durkinjak was called up without further ado. But he got an upset stomach on Saturday, just a few minutes before the away game in Zurich. At the last moment he was able to be removed from the match sheet in accordance with the rules and replaced with a substitute player. For the Uzwil line-up, however, this meant anything but an optimal situation. So the game against the bottom team developed in a completely opposite direction. Only the women’s singles (Schnider), the women’s doubles (Hofstetter/O’Donnell) and the men’s doubles (Kicklitz/NAMüller) were won by the Uzwil team. All other games were lost relatively clearly, namely the three men’s singles (Kicklitz, NAMüller, N.Müller), the other men’s doubles (Utrosa/N.Müller) and the mixed doubles (Jann/Utrosa).

On Sunday, the recovered Zvonimir Durkinjak was back in the game. And things actually looked good for a long time in the home game against Brig. Victory seemed within reach. Up to that point, two men’s singles (Kicklitz, NAMüller), a men’s doubles (Durkinjak/Utrosa) and the women’s singles (Schnider) had been won. However, a men’s singles (N.Müller), a men’s doubles (Kicklitz/NAMüller) and the women’s doubles (Hofstetter/O’Donnell) were lost. But in order to win against Brig in the final result, the necessary luck was missing in the last game of the day, the mixed doubles. Jorina Jann and Zvonimir Durkinjak fought exemplary but still lost out in the fifth and decisive set. Instead of the required victory, the game between Uzwil and Brig ended in a mediocre 4:4 draw.

At the halfway point of the season, BC Uzwil remains in fifth place in the NLA table. This is also thanks to the narrow point gaps between the other teams in midfield. Because the yield with just one win from seven game rounds is exceptionally meager. Now there is some time for everyone involved to recover. The next round won’t be until January 13th – the local derby against Trogen-speicher.
