Pope Francis sent a telegram of condolences to the victims of the storm in the United States yesterday after a tornado hit the town of Gaylord, Michigan (USA). Another telegram was addressed to storm victims in southeastern Canada.
Both telegrams were signed by Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin.
The Pope was “sad of the tragic loss of life and destruction caused by the tornado” that has caused extreme damage in northern Michigan in recent days. At least two people were killed, numerous houses destroyed and more than 40 people injured. According to media reports, it was the strongest tornado in Michigan since 2012.
The Holy Father wanted to express his “heartfelt solidarity with all those affected by this natural disaster” with his letter of condolence, the telegram in question, which the Holy See published yesterday, said. He prays for the injured and displaced, and for all those involved in the relief efforts.

The President of the Canadian Bishops’ Conference, Bishop Raymond Poisson, also received a telegram from Parolin yesterday. “Having learned of the recent storms in southeastern Canada that have resulted in loss of life and widespread destruction, His Holiness Pope Francis extends his prayers for all who are suffering the effects of this catastrophe,” the Cardinal Secretary of State wrote.
After severe storms in southeastern Canada, at least eight people died there. According to media reports, almost a million households are without electricity. Wind gusts of up to 132 km/h had uprooted trees, destroyed power lines and left a trail of destruction in many areas.
