The books had disappeared after a spectacular art robbery in a warehouse in west London on the night of January 29-30 in 2017. Thieves had then made holes in the roof from where they left 12 meter ropes. They climbed down on those ropes to browse through the thousands of books. Those were ready to be shipped to the United States for a major antique fair.
After a few hours they collected the most valuable books in 16 large bags and climbed back up with them to escape through the roof. That way they managed to outwit the motion detectors. It took a long time for the police to track down the thieves.
