After the dramatic attack in the New York subway with shots and at least 23 injuries, the alleged perpetrator, who is currently in custody, criticized his investigation. Investigators had improperly questioned him, taken DNA samples and had documents signed, his defense attorneys complained.
Prosecutors denied this in a letter to Judge Roanne Mann yesterday. There was a “legally authorized search warrant” for the investigation, and the rights of the alleged perpetrator had not been violated.
The 62-year-old is accused of opening fire on a subway train in the Brooklyn borough around two weeks ago during the morning rush hour. At least 23 people were injured by gunfire or the resulting panic. The perpetrator was initially able to escape, but was caught a day later in Manhattan.
He is now to be charged with a “terrorist or other violent attack” on local public transport. If convicted, he faces a life sentence. The motive of the perpetrator initially remained unclear.
