After trainer Quique Setién, technical director Éric Abidal also has to leave FC Barcelona. The contract of the former left back was dissolved on Tuesday.
The resignation of Abidal is the next step in the reorganization at Barcelona, where it is crisis after a bad season. Friday’s 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich was the low point.
Abidal had been in office since June 2018. Four years earlier, the now forty-year-old Frenchman put an end to his career at Olympiacos, in which he previously played for AS Monaco, Lille OSC, Olympique Lyon and FC Barcelona.
On Monday, trainer Setién, who had only been appointed in January, was already put on the street after crisis consultation. It is only a matter of time before Barcelona announces that Ronald Koeman will succeed him.
Koeman still has a contract until the end of 2022 as head coach of the Dutch national team, but his transition to the Spanish top club is almost complete. It will probably be presented on Tuesday evening or Wednesday.
The Barcelona of Lionel Messi and Frenkie de Jong, among others, did not take a prize this season for the first time in years: in La Liga the lead was lost to rival Real Madrid and in the Champions League the defeat against Bayern followed.
