After saving pregnant woman from drowning, homeless man is kicked out of home

Arrived after the closing time of the reception structure, the homeless would apparently have had a heated exchange with those in charge of the home.

A good deed which had the indirect consequence of putting him on the street. This Wednesday, December 29, a 43-year-old man, homeless, experienced a strange misadventure in the streets of Dunkirk (North). After saving a young woman from a suicide attempt, he was denied access to the home in which he was usually housed.

He takes the plunge to save a young woman from drowning

The Dunkirk Lighthouse reports that the initial incident occurred in the early evening on the banks of one of the city’s many canals. “I had gone to buy myself a beer in Lower Town and I returned to the home, taking a few sips. I had not drunk all day, says the forty-something. There, I hear ‘Help! Help! ! ‘ Really shrill screams. I throw my beer and run. “

Arrived at the water’s edge, the man notices that a young woman is drowning and reacts immediately. “I take off my shoes, because they are heavy, and my coat, then I dive, says the homeless. When I get to her, I am frozen. I tell myself that I will not be able to bring her back. I say to the girl, ‘Once you run away, I don’t care if I die.’ And when I get to the edge, I’m sure I’m going to die. “

A suicide attempt

Thanks to the intervention of another passer-by, the young woman and her rescuer still manage to get out of the water and are then taken care of by the firefighters, who arrived on site immediately. In a state of hypothermia, the young woman is quickly put out of danger. “A firefighter came to see me to tell me: ‘Well done, you have just saved two people, because this woman is pregnant'”, explains the SDF.

According to information from Phare Dunkirk, the latter had in fact attempted to commit suicide, after a marital dispute from which she had emerged injured in the hand. “People who throw themselves into the water to end it, we have five or six per year, but a rescue like this, it is one or two maximum per year”, informs a firefighter.

Forced to sleep outside after his heroic act

“It’s not an act of bravery, it’s a normal act, judge the homeless hero for his part. A girl is drowning, we’re going to look for her, damn it!” His good deed, however, was to have unfortunate consequences. After being released by the firefighters, the forty-something has indeed returned to the Inter-municipal Emergency Housing Foyer (Fliu) where he was staying recently, but arrived after closing time.

“He arrived at more than 8 pm, a priori alcoholic, affirms the general manager of the reception structure. And then there were insults.” The homeless would indeed have lost his calm when he was refused access to the home, despite his explanations. Annoyed, the latter was therefore forced to sleep outside after his heroic act, and has not taken any steps to find a place in an accommodation center since.
