Fractional leader Rico Gebhardt (57) and MP Juliane Nagel (41), whose constituency is Leipzig-Connewitz, said that although they came to a head and were often more radical in protest than others. But society can withstand that.

“However, the violent behavior of a minority does not help anyone to implement important demands – not even us,” declared the two left-wing politicians.

“In these days we could talk about a social housing policy, an ecological traffic turnaround or a humane economic order. Instead, the outrage is now directed at senseless violence.”

Before the left, politicians from all other major parties had sharply condemned the riots. Saxony’s head of government Michael Kretschmer (45, CDU) had accused the left that there were politicians in their ranks, “who repeatedly try to find reasons for such excesses of violence”.

Nail and Gebhardt now declared: “Anyone who throws stones or burning Bengalos at inhabited houses or police officers and thinks that this will generate sympathy for political demands among the population is immensely wrong. Social majorities cannot be won this way, on the contrary. This can only be achieved with peaceful, creative activities Protest and democratic means – in Leipzig and elsewhere. We call for that. “
