After nitrogen detention: the Flemish government has new guidelines on how much nitrogen industry and agriculture can emit

That is why the Flemish Minister of the Environment Zuhal Demir (N-VA) has now come up with a temporary solution. All administrations will receive instructions today on how much nitrogen the industry is allowed to emit.

Agricultural and livestock companies that apply for new permits will from now on always have to demonstrate that nitrogen emissions do not have a negative impact on nature. If those effects were to occur, companies would have to take measures to reduce ammonia emissions.

The rules for the industrial and transport sector are different: projects with less than 1 percent extra load on the nitrogen values can be approved immediately. If the permit application results in more than 1 percent extra tax, the same rules apply as those for agricultural and livestock farms.
