In a steep area filled with rocks, just above the GR 34, hikers are surprised to discover a magnificent garden sloping located between The Guildo and Saint-Cast.
The garden is filled with agapanthus, rhododendrons, hydrangeas, and a multitude of flowers which bloom peacefully at the feet of the pines.
Claude Olivier, retired in Saint-Cast, recognizes that the rain this year allowed the flowers to double in size. When he receives compliments on his work, Claude does not forget that this achievement is also a team effort since it is surrounded by his friends, such as Gaston, whom he often quotes, or even Henry Bertin, whom he deciphered the area from 400 to 500 square meters.
Manager at La Caravelle
Looking more closely at the personality and background of this gardener, it becomes easier to understand his interest in rolling up his sleeves surrounded by a team. Before the creation of this castin garden, Claude lived the refined gastronomic and oenological experience in New York for 32 years.
Born in Normandy into a poor family, Claude had to stop school at the age of 12 to go to the fields. At the age of 17, he moved to Paris and was given the opportunity to work in gastronomy. At 23, he left France to settle with his wife in New York and was entrusted with the responsibility of coordinating all the service staff of a large restaurant, La Caravelle, located near the Trump Tower. At New York.
The name of the restaurant in which Claude Olivier worked comes from the type of sailboats that Christopher Columbus used on his travels to the New World which so attracted Europeans.
Born from the 1st confinement
In this restaurant, Claude Olivier rubbed shoulders with Salvator Dali, Simon Perez, Dixon, Sinatra, Aznavour and many other artists. When he returned to France in 2000, and settled in Saint-Cast, Claude Olivier found various occupations such as golf.
Inspired by his love of a job well done and sharing, the idea of doing something on his sloping land germinated and this project saw the light of day during the first confinement.
“Many hikers congratulate me on the work accomplished in the garden and they often take pictures, which makes me happy. The people are very kind ”
