“At 4:00 p.m., the incident commander announced that the fire was extinguished. We handed over the premises to the owner. The last fire department left the scene,” said the spokeswoman.

Thick black smoke from the fire could be seen for miles on Wednesday morning. People were supposed to reduce ventilation on the recommendation of the town hall. However, according to the measurements, pollutants did not appear in the air. Three dozen people left the hall and surrounding buildings in connection with the fire. Rescuers treated 12 of them on the spot. But no one required further medical attention.

Ostrava police spokeswoman Eva Michalíková said on Wednesday that the police are investigating the circumstances of the fire. “Criminal officers have initiated criminal proceedings on suspicion of committing a crime of public endangerment due to negligence. The culprit faces up to five years in prison. We cannot provide further information yet,” she said. According to initial information from the police, an external company was carrying out piling work, and the insulation caught fire.

“The examination of the scene of the fire has ended, in order to establish the origin and cause of the fire. Police specialists from the department of forensic techniques and expertise, a dog handler with a service dog to search for flammable substances, and we are also cooperating with the fire department were on the scene. Criminal investigators are carrying out other procedural actions, such as interrogations persons and they also find out all the facts that could indicate a violation of work safety regulations,” said Michalíková.

The director of the Ostrava site of Skatlop, Radomír Hrabovský, does not want to comment on the fire or its circumstances. “I will not comment on it. I have no room for it. Neither does anyone else from the group,” he told CTK on Wednesday. He repeated those words today.

In the past, the hall belonged to Vítkovice Heavy Machinery from the engineering holding of the Ostrava businessman Jan Světlík. During the reorganization, it was taken over by the company of the founder of the Czechoslovak Group holding, Jaroslav Strnad. However, financial problems recurred. In 2021, the site was acquired in an auction by the company Skatlop.
