When inspiration strikes, Hollywood has a mania for reboots and remakes … which frightens Chris Columbus, director of the first Harry Potter and of Mom I missed the plane.
2001. Little Harry Potter returns to Hogwarts under the guise of Daniel Radcliffe. He meets his friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, and together, they embark on a cult epic that will last ten years and become a true generational marker.
At the time, it was the American director Chris Columbus which pilots the adaptation of the incredible romantic saga of the writer JK Rowling. The filmmaker is known for making feature films for families: Mrs Doubtfire, Mum I missed the plane … He also participated in the writing of Gremlins and Goonies. While one of his cult films has been rebooted, the actor has expressed his fears about the franchise Harry Potter.
Remakes, Reboots: Hollywood’s Bad Fate
Chris Columbus was interviewed by the American magazine Collider, who retraced his career as the holiday season approached (a prolific season for a number of his films). The reporter then asked him if he thought thatHarry potter and the sorcerer’s stone could be redone or if it had to be:
“I can’t answer the first question”, he explained, “I don’t know. With this version of Hollywood we live in, everyone is doing everything again, relaunching everything … Look, there’s a Mum reboot, I missed the plane that is going to go out. But what’s the point? The movie exists, why not just live with the movie that already exists? There is no point in remaking The Wizard of Oz, there is no point in remaking films You have to make original content: you need original content. [Le reste], it is pointless.”
Another useless reboot?
Rant. It is true that certain special effects of the first films show that, twenty years later, the beginning of the franchise is already a little dated. But maybe that’s what makes its charm too?
Paradoxically, what could save Harry Potter reboot is the situation of its creator. JK Rowling is currently in disgrace in Hollywood after making several insensitive comments about transidentity. This does not seem to compromise the continuation of the projects related to his wizarding world (for Warner, it is already a question of completing the trilogy of Fantastic Beasts), but nothing says that in the long term, the work of the author will be definitely snubbed by the cancel– Hollywood culture.
Chris Columbus left Potter after Chamber of Secrets
Chris Columbus does not seem to be done with the wizarding world. According to Variety, there is one final project he would like to participate in (with the trio of actors he revealed):
“I would love to direct The Cursed Child [une pièce de théâtre écrite par J. K. Rowling, dont l’action se passe vingt ans après Les Reliques de la Mort, ndlr]. It’s a fantastic play, and the guys are exactly old enough to play those roles. It’s a little personal fantasy. “
For the moment, no such project is in the pipeline. Recently, Chris Columbus has distinguished himself with The Christmas Chronicles on Netflix. He has also devoted himself to several film projects as a producer. Mom, I missed the plane (it’s starting again), the reboot of his film, will be available on Disney +, from November 12, 2021.
