US President Biden has agreed to deliver so-called anti-personnel mines to Ukraine, to confirm government officials to the US media. The intention is to slow the progress of Russia in the eastern part of Ukraine.
Sources say that Ukraine has agreed to use the mines only on Ukrainian territory and especially not in populated areas.
Anti-personnel mines are land mines that are usually buried close to the ground and detonate when someone steps on them. The latest copies can be set to only be active during a certain period of time. Once the battery is empty, they can no longer explode. This should prevent citizens from becoming victims of the mines later on.
Anti-tank mines
Ten years ago the United States stopped making and buying anti-personnel mines because thousands of civilians were killed or injured every year by old mines. The mines that the Americans are now providing cannot explode over time. This means that they are not covered by the treaties that ban mines.
Human rights activists are critical that the US hand over the anti-personnel mines to Ukraine. So says Human Rights Watch in return for The Washington Post that the mines can not always be disabled.
The Americans have already taken it to Ukraine in the war against Russia anti-tank mines. Yesterday, Ukraine used American ones for the first time ATACMS missiles attack targets in Russia. Until recently, the US only allowed its ally to deploy American missiles in an area occupied by the Russians.
