Urgent application not accepted
However, the application was not accepted for hearing in the city council on Thursday evening. That’s what City Councilor Engel MDR SAXONY said. “We submitted our request on Monday as an urgent application. The mayor did not recognize the urgent request. I assume that we will negotiate it in the city council in November.” However, the discussion at the current hour in the city council showed that “there is definitely a need to speak here,” said Engel.
City Councilor Zastrow: “Complete loss of reality”
Mayor Dirk Hilbert (FDP) clarified the chances of the concert hall and the Wagner Academy during question time, thereby provoking many question marks from city councilor Holger Zastrow. The former FDP city councilor spoke to MDR KULTUR at the end of September about the “complete loss of reality” on the part of those responsible and called the project elitist: “It remains a mystery that urgently needs to be clarified as to how this initiative could even come about and what legitimacy it has.”
CDU criticizes mayor’s solo approach: city council not included in project
Criticism also comes from the CDU: “Dresden is a world-class cultural metropolis. I doubt whether, in the current situation of cultural institutions, the establishment of an academy with the construction of a new building with an orchestra and concert hall is necessary and the correct setting of priorities,” explains Mario Schmidtcultural policy spokesman for the CDU city council group.
And Schmidt continues: “The question also arises as to why the city council was not involved in advance in a project of this size. Unfortunately, the top management proves once again how little they care about trusting and constructive cooperation with the city council.”
About what is it accurate?
A new concert hall for 600 spectators is to be built on the Königsufer next to the Augustus Bridge in Dresden. The concert hall is part of a planned Richard Wagner Academy, which is intended to be a center of excellence for romantic orchestral and opera practice of the 19th century, researching Wagner’s original sound and serving the local Dresden Music Festival. An orchestra and a choir rehearsal hall are also to be built in the house, as well as workshop, archive and seminar rooms.
The director of the Dresden Music Festival, Jan Vogler, sees the decision as a great opportunity and told MDR KULTUR that it is a huge appreciation for Dresden as a city of music, culture and art – also in an international context.
