Elke Kahr and the KPÖ surprisingly overthrew the long-term mayor of the ÖVP, Siegfried Nagl, in the municipal council elections on September 26th in Graz and took first place with a clear lead – more on that in voting cards doesn’t change anything: KPÖ in first place (September 26, 2021 ) Already in the days after that, a left majority became apparent in favor of cooperation, although SPÖ club boss Michael Ehmann had not achieved the stated goal of re-entry into the city senate – more on this in Graz: KPÖ wants dark red-green-red (13.10 .2021)
SPÖ meets again for internal party discussions
Nevertheless, the Social Democrats evidently showed a willingness to support a left-wing majority in the local council. According to reports, a preliminary decision should be made on Friday evening, because the SPÖ will meet again in the evening for internal party discussions – if everything goes smoothly, the communists could announce the start of the coalition negotiations on Saturday.
The KPÖ, Greens and SPÖ together have 28 seats in the 48-member municipal council – without the SPÖ it would have been only 24 and therefore too few. The KPÖ and the Greens together have four seats in the seven-person Senate. Much now points to a first KPÖ mayor of Graz, Elke Kahr, and a Green Vice Mayor named Judith Schwentner.
