After George Floyd’s death: Minneapolis plans to reorganize police

The killing of black George Floyd has ramifications for the police. The city of Minneapolis, where Floyd died, plans to dissolve and reorganize the police. The law enforcement officers are not reformable, the verdict.

As a consequence of the violent death of Black George Floyd, the city of Minneapolis wants to completely reorganize police work. Council members Alondra Cano tweeted that there was agreement that the agency could not be reformed in its current form.

City council chairwoman Lisa Bender told CNN that they had agreed to create a completely new structure for police work. A “new model of public security” should be created “that will actually keep our community safe,” said Bender.

Mayor of Police Reform

It is unclear whether the resolution will actually succeed – because the city council is voting against the Mayor of Minneapolis, Jacob Frey. He had spoken out on Saturday at a demonstration against winding up the local police and instead campaigned for reforms. He was promptly booed and asked to leave the protest.

In the metropolis in the state of Minnesota, Floyd was killed in a brutal police operation almost two weeks ago. A white policeman had kneeled on the back of his neck for almost nine minutes. The incident triggered nationwide protests in the United States and numerous demonstrations in other countries against excessive police violence and racism.

Reform plans in New York

Meanwhile, in New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio presented proposals for reforming the police force in the metropolis. In this way, part of the agency’s budget could in future be used for youth and social work. In addition, the handling of disciplinary files by civil servants should be made more transparent.
