Soon, the end of puppy mills, cats and rabbits? On June 4, New York State has passed a bill aimed at combating large-scale farming. Please note that said bill does not directly concern these facilities but focuses on pet stores that mainly source pets from these places, where the conditions of detention of furry animals are often appalling, as confided to the HuffPost Maureen Linehan, porte-parole de l’American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty :
“Currently, out-of-state puppy mills ship their puppies through a pipeline of middlemen to New York pet stores, where they are marketed as healthy puppies from responsible breeders. »
Direct sale from breeders to owners will still be allowed
This bill also encourages pet stores to join shelters or rescue groups in order to use their retail spaces to “show off” these animals for adoption. However, this new legislation would not completely ban New Yorkers from buying animals from breeders. In other words, it would still be legal for breeders to sell their animals directly to future owners.
According to the ASPCA, as relayed by the HuffPost, New York State has one of the highest concentrations of pet stores offering pets for sale.
And the legislation on the sale of pets in France?
In France, it is from January 1, 2024 that pet shops will no longer be able to sell cats and dogs. This decision was enacted in France in mid-November 2021 by Parliament, via a final vote by the Senate, as part of the bill combating animal abuse. In short, finally good news for our 30 million furry friends!
