The World Health Organization announced on Tuesday that the new strain of the Coronavirus, which was transmitted from China, “is not yet a global pandemic”, after it declared a health emergency with an international dimension on January 31.
“Currently, we are not in a state of global pandemic,” Sylvie Bryan, head of WHO’s Department of Pandemic and Epidemic Diseases, told reporters in Geneva.
Brian, who returned Monday from China, also noted that scientists “have been able to determine the genetic sequence and methods of its transmission,” Al Arabiya news channel reported.
To date, 427 deaths have been confirmed in China and more than 20,000 injuries globally, with more than 600 people recovering in China.
Two deaths were reported outside the mainland, the first in the Philippines and the second in Hong Kong.
